Jesus' disciples didn't only know him as the son of God, but identified him as such.<br/><br/>Besides, calling Jesus the son of Joseph was usually tied to insults. Like when the pharisees asked Jesus who his father was. For a child to have no known "earthly" father is kind of embarassing in human terms.
