Peter tells us that God has “granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness” (2 Peter 1:3). We can be assured, knowing that there is nothing that we need that God has not, or will not, provide to us. In order to make it to heaven, we simply need to take advantage of what God has given. Peter mentions three things we need to receive our reward:
He has given us His word. He granted all things we need “though the true knowledge of Him who called us” (2 Peter 1:3). We need the knowledge that comes from the message of Christ. Without the gospel, we cannot be saved (Romans 1:16).
He has given us His promises. God has “granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4). We can have hope in God’s promises because He cannot lie (Hebrews 6:18) and because Jesus is the guarantee (Hebrews 7:22).
We must add to our faith. While God makes salvation possible, we have our part to play. We must add to our faith – moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, love (2 Peter 1:5-7). God has done His part and will fulfill His promise. If we continue to add to our faith, then “the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you” (2 Peter 1:11).
