Sermon on the Mount: Introduction

Sermon on the Mount

When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. He opened His mouth and began to teach them” (Matthew 5:1-2).

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gave instructions for the life of a disciple. As people came to follow Him, He wanted them to be sure they understood what it meant to be His disciple. So He provided them with instructions showing the type of life they would be called to live. In His sermon, we see that the life of a disciple is:

  1. A blessed life
  2. A righteous life
  3. A sincere life
  4. A focused life
  5. A just life
  6. A different life

We also need to be sure that we understand what it means to be a disciple and how it will necessarily impact our lives. Jesus said elsewhere, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” (John 8:31-32). To be a disciple means we must continue in the Lord’s words. The message recorded in the Sermon on the Mount is a great place for us to start in order to learn the type of character we must develop so that we might be pleasing to Him.

The Sermon on the Mount is also a good place for us to return periodically so that we can evaluate ourselves and see if there is any aspect in our lives in which we are falling short or if there is any part of our lives in which we can continue to improve.

As we begin this study, let us each take an honest look at ourselves to see how we can better reflect the life that is expected of one who is a citizen of the kingdom of heaven.
