Answering Basic Questions

The New Testament talks a lot about the Holy Spirit, yet many do not have a clear understanding of who or what the Holy Spirit is. However, it is important that we recognize who (not what) the Holy Spirit is and understand His work and purpose.

Who is the Holy Spirit? Let us notice four points about Him.Continue Reading

Answering Basic Questions (Part 4): Who Is Jesus?

Answering Basic Questions

Virtually everyone we will meet has at least heard of Jesus, though they may have different opinions or assumptions about Him. Some may see Him as a great teacher. Others might think that he was just a Jewish rabbi. There are also those who believe that He was nothing more than a myth or a legend. Then there are believers who will affirm that He is the Son of God.

So who is Jesus? We will just scratch the surface here, but let us consider four points to help us answer that question.Continue Reading

The Godhead

The Baptism of Jesus

When people talk about the “Godhead,” they often use the term “Trinity” in reference to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The term “Trinity” is not in the Bible; however, that does not necessarily mean that the concept is unbiblical. Yet many believe that there is just one person of God and deny the concept of the “Trinity.”

In this article, we are going to look at what the Bible teaches about the Godhead – what it means and whether there are three persons of God or just one.

Equal with God (Season 6, Episode 2)

But He answered them, ‘My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.’ For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God” (John 5:17-18).

Throughout the gospel of John, Jesus affirmed His deity and His equal status with the Father. This was one of the reasons why the rulers opposed Him. In this episode, we will consider several passages in the gospel of John that demonstrate the fact that Jesus was equal with the Father.

How Jesus Became Like Us (Season 4, Episode 2)

Jesus came to earth in order to save man from sin (Matthew 1:21; Luke 19:10). This was God’s plan from the beginning (Ephesians 3:11) and was put in motion shortly after sin entered the world (Genesis 3:15). In order to save us, Jesus first had to be made like us: “Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people” (Hebrews 2:17). How was Jesus made like us? Completely? Or was there some sense in which He already like us? This is what we will discuss in this episode.

What Christians Need to Know About the Jehovah’s Witnesses

Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall

Jehovah’s Witnesses are commonly known for their zeal in evangelism – going door-to-door and trying to teach people what they believe to be the truth. Many people, even if they do not personally know anyone who is a Jehovah’s Witness, have encountered them through these unannounced visits to their home. Those who personally know any members of this group will probably acknowledge that they are good, moral people who also have some peculiar beliefs.

It is good for Christians to have at least a basic understanding of what others believe in order to be better equipped to teach the truth and defend against their errors. In this article, I will not attempt to make an exhaustive rebuttal to the beliefs and practices of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Rather, I will simply attempt to highlight some notable beliefs and explain how these are contrary to the Scriptures.*

“Before Abraham Was Born, I Am” (10/23)

Thought from today’s Bible reading from John 7-8.

There are many people in the world who believe that Jesus was just a regular human being and that He never possessed the attributes of Deity. Some among our own brethren believe that Jesus surrendered His deity when He came to earth. Both of these theories are debunked by Jesus’ own words.

Notice the conversation Jesus had with certain ones of the Jews who did not believe in Him:

‘Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.’ So the Jews said to Him, ‘You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.‘ Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple” (John 8:56-59).
